Choosing Ecommerce Software
If you’re keen to start your own webstore then you’ve probably been looking into ecommerce software. There are a lot of options available and some are easier than others. If you’re looking for something you host yourself that’s fully featured you could pick up a package like Magento. It’s a wonderful package with lots of options and totally customizable. It may not be very newbie friendly though. It takes some knowledge to install and manage as do most of the software options.
If you’re looking for a plug and play store you should probably go with something that’s a monthly subscription service like shopify, an ebay store, ect. These types of services carry a monthly fee and are not totally custom like a software version you can host yourself. They are however much easier.
You can usually get started just by adding items to the database with a slick interface. Setting up an installed software package will mean a couple hours of setting up the database and going through settings. You also have the comfort of a more secure payment processor and protection.
If it’s hosted yourself you’ll have to worry about security. This is a big concern if you get a site that gets heavily used. Hacking attempts are real and if they’re stolen from your hosting you’re in big trouble. You shouldn’t be storing this information anyway, but it can still be a threat to your business.
If you’re hosted through something like Shopify they have much more reliable servers and security methods to protect your customers. You also have the option with some of these to use drop shipping! This is great if you find yourself wanting to outsource to help grow your business. Even if you don’t you can always get with a service like ShipWire to do this for you as well.
I’d suggest trying out a couple different packages before you decide on any ecommerce software. Many of them will allow you a 30 day test drive before you have to pay up. You can use this to test out the feature and see the ease of use. If you don’t like it nothing says you can’t use something else!
